Postgraduates of OLRI Participating in the 2nd Research Workshop for Postgraduate Students of Australian Studies in China

  On June 18, 2017, Hou Qian, Song Yang, Tian Qixiu and Liu Xiaoxiao, four postgraduate from our institute participated in the 2nd Research Workshop for Postgraduate Students of Australian Studies in China hosted by Beijing Foreign Studies University in Beijing. In the workshops, Professor Greg McCarthy, BHP Billiton Chair of Australian Studies at PKU, Prof. Wang Jinghui of Tsinghua University, Dr. James Oswald from Central Compilation and Translation Bureau and Associate Prof. Dai Ning and Xia Yuhe from Beijing Foreign Studies University were invited to give instructions and suggestions to 30 postgraduates from different universities in their studies on Australian politics, economics, literature, culture and so on.

  Hou Qian, a postgraduate of Grade 2015 from our institute presented her approach and method in the research of Australian writer Thea Astley. Her presentation was warmly received by the professors and scholars, who believed this was a very significant topic and Hou’s perspective was very interesting and innovative. They gave her many useful comments and suggestions in her later research. The other three postgraduates of Grade 2016 also exchanged their research understanding with the professors.This workshop has really been very rewarding for these four post-graduates.

  In the end, six students: Hou Qian from The Oceanic Literature Research Institute, Anhui University, Gao Fangfang and Shi Lidan from East China Normal University, Zhang Fan, Chen Zhixin and Gao Pengyu from Beijing Foreign Studies University, won the best research project prize donated by the Australian Embassy in China. The prizes were books written by a famous Australian writer Thomas Keneally.
