Wang Labao, the vice-chairman of China Australia Literature ResearchInstitute and the prestigious professor from the foreign language school ofSoochow University has brought us a fantastic academic report on the trend ofthe criticism of Australia Literature after the phase of different kinds of‘Theories’ on Oct 21, 2017 in Room 310 of Humanities Building, AnhuiUniversity. Chen Hong, the vice-chairman of China Australia Literature ResearchInstitute and professor of East China Normal University listened to the reportalong with teachers and students from Oceanic Literature Institute, andstudents from other majors across the foreign language school as well. Thelecture was conducted in a warm and lively atmosphere, during which discussionswere held by the active attendees who were bursting with questions for theprofessor. Before the official start of the lecture, professor Zhan Chunjuan thehostess and director of Oceanic literature institute of Anhui University made ashort speech on behalf of the institute to welcome professor Wang.

Prof.Wang first made an overview about the history of Australia literaturecriticism, which consists of nationalist criticism, “new criticism”, theemerging and the disappearance of “Theories”. After shortly talking about theabove four periods, Wang continued on with the criticism of Australianliterature after the phase of “Theories”. He pointed out that since the1990s“Theories” have been fading away in Australia, and over the last 20 years,Australia literature critics have made enormous achievements not only onpost-colonialism, but also on at least three brand new fields, which arethe systematic study of literature, the digital research of literature and thetransnational study of literature respectively. On these new fields, Prof. Wangfurthered detailed discussions and concluded that Australia literature criticismhas been moving on a new way of neo- empiricism under the digital conditionsince the 1990s. Stressing on foundation and resources, this literaturecriticism method is a more intelligent and pragmatic way of reading, which isworthy for the new generation of Australia literature critics to ponder overand put to use.

The lecture is comprehensive in content and varied in style, whichhas broadened the attendees’ visions. This innovative and insightful speech isof great value for the Oceanic Literature teachers and students to reconstructthe pragmatic literature criticism based on criticism from the 20th century.
