The joint operation Wasawasa 2 between the Fiji Navy and the New Zealand Navy has come to an end.

During this time they inspected close to 160 vessels in Fiji Waters which included vessels from Fiji and abroad.

During the two year operation close to 690 vessels were inspected.

Fiji Navy Commander Humphrey Tawake has thanked their New Zealand counterparts for helping Fiji in protecting its borders.

Tawake says that operation Wasawasa began last year and during this time three New Zealand Navy Ships have provided patrolling in the Fiji waters.

Commanding Officer of HMNZS Otago, Lieutenant Commander Lorna Gray says that during the patrols about 23,000 kilometres were covered and 1,160 hours were spent on patrol during the combined operation.

The distance covered is equivalent to 5.3 return trips from New Zealand to Fiji.
