Proud and patriotic people of Fiji’s first capital, Levuka, came out in numbers to celebrate Fiji's 48th Independence Day.

Commissioner Eastern Luke Moroivalu who was chief guest at the ceremony stated that Fiji has come a long way adding that after more than four decades of independence Fiji have every reason to celebrate the occasion.

Moroivalu further said that as a nation we celebrate our unique existence together with our religious and cultural diversity, resembling a sense of unity and tolerance for one another which is a cornerstone for a strong multi cultural society.

Celebrations in the old capital had started with historic re‑enactment of the deed of cession which was performed by the elders and students of Fiji’s first capital.
